Volunteer for the Smoky Mountain Relay

Other big relay races like Hood to Coast or Ragnar, require each relay team to supply one to many volunteers OR be charged a huge fee! Most of the teams affected by this policy are the local teams, the ones living within a 100 miles of all parts of the course.
The Smoky Mountain Relay does not require teams to supply volunteers. Instead, we focus on reaching out to local community groups and schools, those organizations that habitually need to raise funds to support their missions.
That being said, if you are running this year’s Smoky Mountain Relay and know of a group or even friends that would like to volunteer, please point them to this page. Volunteering for the SMR is a blast!!
Volunteering is having fun without the run!
- Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and physically capable to perform all of their assigned duties. Shifts are 6 hours or less. You can sign up for multiple shifts as long as you give yourself time to get from one location to the next.
- Regular relay staff members will be paid $20 an hour (or a $20 donation to the non-profit of your choosing). Typically, there will be two people at each exchange; one to manage van parking and one to check in teams as they come in.
- Medic staff members will be paid $30 per hour.
- Medic staff need to have at least wilderness first responder training.
- We ask that all volunteers complete their full shift, be prompt, and allow additional time for driving to their assignment.
